Rice contains lots of fibre, protein, essential minerals, and very little fats and is a great superfood. But when it comes to skin not all rice is equal because different rice (I’m pretty sure rice is the plural of rice) have different amounts of Omega-3.
Omega 3 can help with a whole load of skin conditions, but for acne it helps by regulating sebum production by producing a family of hormones called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins stop your body producing too much sebum in the hair follicles and so reduce the frequency of blocked pores.
White rice contains 10.2mg of Omega 3 and Brown rice contains 13.6mg of Omega 3 per half cup. But stand aside..one-half cup of raw wild rice (which is actually a grass, not a grain) contains 240 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. That’s almost 18x as much.
Wild rice also contains almost twice the protein and fiber as brown rice, and is high in B vitamins, manganese, zinc, potassium, phosphorous and magnesium, while being relatively lower in calories than it’s white/brown cousins.
As a bonus, it’s not just fighting acne that Omega-3 is good for – high levels of Omega 3 have been shown to work on the phospholipid bilayer of the skin, helping it hold onto water, leading to moister, softer skin – and plumper skin cells mean a younger looking appearance.
So next time you’re in the supermarket…try a small food swap of white/brown to Wild – your skin will thank you for it.
